Indonesian paradise just a single stopover away after new route launched

The paradisiacal region of Raja Ampat in Indonesia is now only a single stopover away for British travellers thanks to a new flight launched by Garuda Indonesia that will connect onto their London-Jakarta non-stop service twice a week. Indonesia’s national flag carrier, the operator of the only non-stop flight between the island nation and the United Kingdom, will launch a daily service between Jakarta and the city of Sorong in West Papua from 10 March 2018. The industrial city is...

Review: Robinson Club Noonu Resort, Maldives

Hanging bats, bigger than legs of jamón, chatter above a peep of chickens casually pecking away at a bleached white sandy path, which meanders through Robinsons’s new Club Noonu resort. But there’s no hint of foul play. This Swiss Family Robinson-esque island, one of 1,200 in the Maldives, previously belonged to a chicken farmer. As part of the buy-out clause, the owner made sure his precious feathered friends (the ones too old to travel at least) would be well looked...

Skiing with a difference in Ruka, Finland

In a parallel universe where Lucy, Mr Tumnus and Aslan go skiing in Narnia rather than trying to vanquish the White Witch, Ruka in Finnish Lapland would be the perfect film set. The pines which dot the landscape are barely discernible, they look like huge, frozen cauliflowers and log cabins huddle together, ready to welcome chilly adventurers . Presented with such winter wonderland credentials it struck me as odd that Finland is still relatively unknown as a ski destination outside...

Exploring one of Enid Blyton’s favourite retreats: Knoll House, Dorset

Author: Luke O Driscoll “If it was good enough for ol’ Enid Blyton it’ll be good enough for us,” I tell the Iranian girlfriend on the four-hour drive from South London to the Knoll House Hotel, located on the Dorset coast. It was half a century back the author pronounced this as her favourite home away from home. We wonder how much has changed. On arrival, it seems not much. Entering the Knoll House is like stumbling onto the set...

Quit your job and travel the world like… Lois Pryce

To celebrate International Women's Day, TLE caught up with inspirational writer and adventurer Lois Pryce, who quit her job at the BBC in 2003 to ride her motorbike from Alaska to the tip of South America. Tell us a little bit about you?  Lois Pryce - author, travel writer, banjo picker. Where was the first place you visited outside of your native country? Like so many British kids in the 80s, my first taste of the great unknown was a...

Catching a cab in the capital

Most of the time, catching a cab to travel around the busy streets of London offers both business commuters and tourists the ultimate in convenience, taking us to our destinations without incident. But while many of us know the basics of what to do after a car accident or other incident on the road, how to react to being involved in a taxi accident is not such widespread knowledge. In five years on Oxford Street alone, there were 55 pedestrians...
