Firefighters respond to major blaze at Southend Airport

Firefighters were today called to tackle a major blaze following an explosion inside an airport hangar.

The fire broke out inside a building next to Southend Airport, Essex, at around 10.30am on Wednesday.

There were no aircraft within the hanger at the time and it’s not yet know known what caused the explosion.

The fire was put out after around an hour and caused no disruption at the airport.

Aaron Chesham, who witnessed the fire, said: “I would like to say well done to the airport fire service and Essex fire service for attending so quickly.”

A spokesman for Essex Fire and Rescue said: “Firefighters have been called to an incident this morning involving an aircraft hangar.”

A spokesman for Southend Airport said: “Essex Fire and Rescue is currently dealing with an incident at the Air Livery hanger on the north side of the airfield. London Southend Airport is still open and operating as normal.”
