Claim by Boris Johnson's backers that Sue Gray's relocation to Sir Keir Starmer's office demonstrates a conspiracy is "ludicrous"

The newspaper quoted top Tory MPs in suggesting Sue Gray's appointment is proof the partygate probe was a 'Labour plot'.

The senior civil servant, who investigated the partygate scandal, has quit the Cabinet Office to join the Labour Party.

The Labour leader is said to be on the lookout for a candidate who understands how to operate at the top level of government.

The PM says he is confident he has enough support within his party.

“A blind man on a galloping horse would see this for what it is. Essentially what we have here is the government wanting to deflect from a bad news day."

Boris Johnson insisted in parliament that the rules were followed at all times when lockdown restrictions were in place.

The prime minister is expected to tell the Commons that he accepts "full responsibility" for his failings and is "humbled by the whole experience".

It comes after Simon Clarke spent this morning telling broadcasters that the “meeting was held at the instigation of Sue Gray”.
