Nick Thomas-Symonds, Labour’s shadow home secretary, said Johnson had lost control of his “vanity yacht”.
Johnson insisted that the new vessel is not a waste of money and will help the UK attract foreign investment in an interview on Wednesday.
The vessel – which could reportedly cost £200 million – is due to be paid for out of the Ministry of Defence budget.
"It shows there are people in No 10 who just think there’s free money and who think that waving a Union Jack shows what a great power we are."
"As for financing this ship, there's £200 million to find and I'd be surprised if the running costs weren't £5 million a year," a leading naval architect has said.
How would you name the new flagship?
