“The barracks are now a byword for the cruel injustice of the Government’s attempts to shirk responsibility for providing a fair, humane and properly-run asylum system.”

The prime minister praised "wonderful" Priti Patel for making the UK the "Saudi Arabia of penal policy".

Angela Rayner said it was time the prime minister took away Patel's "get out of jail free card" following the incident.
