It comes after unionists started a lawsuit arguing the Brexit deal signed by Boris Johnson’s government does not respect the 1800 Acts of Union.
It raises concerns about a "two-speed UK" - where different things happen in Northern Ireland compared to the rest of Great Britain.
Washington warned that triggering Article 16 would undermine peace and trade - and called on the UK to "abandon this dangerous path".
It is the second double-decker bus to be torched in the past week, amid protests against the Northern Ireland protocol.
