The prime minister has sent further warnings that the UK is prepared to rewrite unilaterally the terms of the Brexit deal he signed.
The Prime Minister said the protocol fails to command cross-community support in the region and ‘we need to sort it out’.
It has been reported that the PM and Liz Truss, his foreign secretary, are considering whether to unilaterally suspend parts of the agreement.
The deputy PM said we need to unlock the problems with the Protocol - which was agreed by Boris Johnson’s Government as part of the Brexit divorce from the EU.
The peer said the Government had faced the choice of accepting the protocol or walking away and facing, at best, a second referendum or no Brexit at all.
Michelle O'Neill said the UK was putting the Brexit deal "in jeopardy" in an interview with Sky News.
He urged prime minister Boris Johnson to oppose the EU as much as he opposes Russia’s treatment of Ukraine.
“This announcement has created uncertainty and unpredictability and certainly no stability, so I’m not sure what the purpose of this move is … it’s an absolute breach of international law," an EU official has said.
