Labour compares Gary Lineker being taken off air to ‘Putin’s Russia’
Lucy Powell said the Match of the Day presenter tweeted something the government didn't like and was taken off air for it.
Lucy Powell said the Match of the Day presenter tweeted something the government didn't like and was taken off air for it.
The recently reinstated Match Of The Day host asked the Twitter owner whether the language was ‘acceptable’ on his platform.
This is about "politics, about leadership and about whether, in the 21st century, it makes sense to stop people saying what they believe."
"Unnecessary fixture decided by an own goal," Dan Walker said, while Gary Neville simply responded with laughing emojis.
The MOTD presenter praised people's empathy towards others fleeing persecution and war, saying we "remain a country of predominantly tolerant people".
It is understood the corporation will apologise to the Match Of The Day presenter.
"I'm on my way to Paddington, where my Bradshaw guide tells me that a BBC presenter can be political, providing it supports the government narrative," one person tweeted in response.
The corporation is reportedly expected to announce it is reviewing its social media guidelines following the controversy.
Several of the broadcaster’s football shows was pulled last minute on Saturday as presenters and reporters withdrew in solidarity with Lineker.
