The fee meant people who have been living in the UK but have been forced to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme if they want to remain here after Brexit faced charges of just over £10 for 15 minutes.

“Soon, they will be brought under the regime of an increasingly digitised and aggressive hostile environment,” activists have warned.
The Home Office said those who do not apply after 28 days “may be liable for enforcement action and will not be eligible for work, benefits or services”.
