The Frenchman won three Premier League titles, seven FA Cup crowns and seven Community Shields in 22 years at the club, but has decided to step down, even though he had another year left on his contract.
He made Arsenal into the famous “invincibles” side. However, in recent years large sections of the Arsenal fan base have turned against him and failure to qualify for the Champions League heaped even more pressure on him.
By their standards it has been a poor season, however if they win the Europe League, they will compete in next year’s champions league competition. Wenger will not be there to steer the side though.
Here is his statement in full…
After careful consideration and following discussions with the club, I feel it is the right time for me to step down at the end of the season.
I am grateful for having had the privilege to serve the club for so many memorable years.
I managed the club with full commitment and integrity.
I want to thank the staff, the players, the Directors and the fans who make this club so special.
I urge our fans to stand behind the team to finish on a high.
To all the Arsenal lovers take care of the values of the club.
My love and support for ever.
Arsene Wenger
