To say the tide has turned against Brexit is an understatement. Ever since the UK left the European Union, an overwhelming majority of polls have shown that ‘Bregret’ is prominent amongst the general public – and this week, the demand to rejoin EU soared to its highest-ever level.
A poll from WeThink, affiliated with Omnisis, shows a staggering level of disillusion with Brexit in its current form. As it stands, 63% of those surveyed believe that the UK should now reverse the referendum result, and return to its previous trading relationship with the bloc.
The poll shows a huge recent swing in voter sentiment. Although a substantial majority (58%) of respondents still backed the campaign to return to the EU at the start of the month, a huge five-point swing has occurred since, with support for rejoin reaching its highest point.
Chaos at the very heart of government is likely to have played a major part in this sentiment shift. The Conservative Party Conference in Manchester was ridiculed from all quarters, and Rishi Sunak’s bid to relaunch his leadership appears to have failed miserably.
With confidence low in the Brexit-backing Tories, Britain’s divorce from the EU is now being seen in a more pessimistic light. On Saturday, German Finance Minister Christian Linder invited the UK to ‘intensify its working relationship’ with the bureaucrats in Brussels.
It’s a suggestion Liz Webster is delighted to take on board. The founder of Save British Farming, which campaigns against food security issues caused by Brexit, believes that the time has come to ‘find safety and security’ by rejoining the EU in the near future.
“The truth is that support for Brexit is now a fringe issue. It’s impossible to defend it anymore. Brexit is a disaster. It’s is a busted flush, so we should flush it away from our lives and find safety and security with our friends, relatives and neighbours again.” | Liz Webster
