Keir Starmer has lashed out at the Tories for a “shameful dereliction of duty”, after more than 300 Conservative MPs voted down an amendment that would have implemented recommendations made by the inquiry into the Grenfell Tower disaster.
The clause, to the Fire Safety Bill, would have forced owners or managers of flats to share information with their local fire service about the materials and design of external walls, and required them to carry our regular inspections of lifts and flat entrance doors.
It would have also mandated landlords to share evacuation and fire safety instructions with residents of the building.
But the amendment was defeated by 188 votes to 318 – a majority of 110 – spurring Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to brand it a “shameful dereliction of duty”.
Particular ire was reserved for Felicity Buchan, who was narrowly elected as the Conservative MP for Kensington – the constituency containing Grenfell – in last year’s election. David Lammy, the shadow justice secretary, said that Buchan had “let the victims and their families down”.
The legislation was put together in response to the fire at Grenfell Tower in June 2017, in which 72 residents of the high-rise block of flats were killed. It was caused by an electrical fault in a fridge-freezer.
The Tories just voted down a Labour amendment to implement the recommendations of part 1 of the Grenfell inquiry but that’s fine because every year they shine a green light on Downing Street.
