In the latest episode of ‘Suella Braverman says something to get everyone riled up’, the Home Secretary has even fallen foul of Mark Rowley. The Met Police Commissioner has said that he ‘does not know’ what the senior Tory means by her latest statement.
When describing the pro-Palestine demonstrations in London last week, Braverman referred to the protests as ‘hate marches’. This, despite the Met Police describing the gatherings as peaceful. Calls for a ceasefire between Israel and Palestine headlined the civil action.
However, the firebrand politician told Sky News that she saw the protests as ‘hateful’. The comments were made a few days before Braverman claimed that homeless people were sleeping in tents ‘as a lifestyle choice‘. Just another standard week, then…
The comments haven’t escaped the attention of Mark Rowley. Appearing on The News Agents podcast, he was quizzed about Braverman’s choice of words. Though largely diplomatic in his response, the Commission couldn’t hide his initial confusion:
“She’s picked two words out of the English language there and just strung them together. I don’t know what she means, whether it is everyone there or just a few people there. It’s not for me, but I can’t hold politicians to account.” | Mark Rowley
More marches in support of Palestine have been planned for next week, on Armistice Day. An increased police presence will be deployed in London throughout, in a bid to help quell potential clashes between different groups of protesters.
