Scotland Votes NO to Independence

06:20am: Scotland has voted No to independence, 55 per cent to 45 per cent. But while Edinburgh voted No, Glasgow voted Yes and the close nature of the results is likely to shake-up the political fabric of the UK. A total 1.6 million Scots voted for independence, First Minister Alex Salmond has thanked those who voted in favour.

David Cameron is expected to announce today how he plans to sow Britain back together.

09:10am: Lord Smith of Kelvin to oversee further devolution: A negotiation process will now begin based on the promises made by the Better Together campaign. Taxpayers in Scotland are likely to see changes sooner rather than later as Cameron looks to settle the 45% of people in Scotland that voted No. The so-called Devo-max  would allow Holyrood to raise a further £2 billion in revenues and have even greater control over income tax than has already been planned.

Glasgow, Dundee, North Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire had a majority ‘Yes’ vote: See a full list of results here.

84.59 per cent of the population turned out to vote, compared to only 36 per cent who voted in the local and European elections that saw UKIP gain seats.

First Minister Alex Salmond has accepted “the democratic verdict of the people”, and called on the leaders of the three main pro-Union parties to “live up” to promises of further devolution.

More to follow….
