People from around the world are looking at Great Britain and wondering how it went “so wrong”, Gavin Esler told The London Economic in an exclusive interview.
Earlier this year, German newspaper Der Spiegal published an in-depth report into Britain’s demise from a global superpower to an isolated has-been.
UK correspondent Jorg Schindler wrote how, for the past several months, the flow of bad news “has been constant” with the country’s coffers empty, public administration ineffective and the nation’s corporations struggling.
He said “Britain has dialed 999 and is waiting in vain for the paramedics to show up”.
Shindler isn’t the only one pointing to the UK’s demise.
As Esler points out, Zeit, the German magazine, referred to Jacob Rees-Mogg in one edition as “ein lebendes fossil”, which translates to “the living fossil”.
And they say satire is dead!
