The Labour leadership is having a good time at the party’s annual conference in Liverpool this week. After empty rooms and tepid speeches filled the halls at the Conservative Party’s event, Angela Rayner fired off a few pun-tastic put-downs to a packed-out crowd.

There was substance behind the style. Labour’s Deputy Leader took aim at the bullying allegations levelled against two former Cabinet Ministers, and also reserved some special condemnation for Suella Braverman, who was fresh from stepping on a guide dog last week.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak failed to reverse the tide of negativity that has swept through his party in recent times, after several pledges he raised at the Tory Conference were met with criticism. The unfavourable feedback has only compounded the party’s misery.

Meanwhile, Labour are in a strong position to return to power at the next General Election, some 14 years since their last term in office. Though Keir Starmer has warned against complacency amongst his colleagues, there was certainly a jovial atmosphere at this conference.
Liz Truss, Nadhim Zahawi, Gavin Williamson, Dominic Raab, and Suella Braverman were all roasted within a blistering 50-second passage of Angela Rayner’s address. Her jibes played well to the crowd, with each one greeted by laughter and cheers.
“The Tory party have had quite a year.. The leader who lost to a lettuce. The Chancellor who forgot his own tax return and forgot to declare it, too. Gavin Williamson forced to resign because he’s a bully, who knew? And Dominic Raab too… everyone knew about that.”
“And the Home Secretary, sacked as a threat to national security. The same Home Secretary who was re-appointed the next week. Isn’t that called ‘time served’? As it turns out, she does believe in the rehabilitation of offenders after all.” | Angela Rayner
