Shell also announced that it would return a further £3.4 billion to shareholders in what has come as a shock to those struggling with bills.

It comes as Green campaigners have reacted angrily to the appointment of Jacob Rees-Mogg as Business Secretary where he will be in charge of the energy and climate brief.
"John Redwood is a mountain of utter dribble. He must be kept out of the rain as he will dissolve," said one person after he made his comment.
"Freezing energy bills this autumn is essential, but the PM is making the wrong people pay," said the TUC after it shared the poll findings.
Sir Lindsay Hoyle said he will take it down as "bad management or incompetence".
