In a moment resembling a scene from the Christmas classic Love Actually the World last night sent a strong message to US President Donald Trump that “we will not be bullied”.
More than 120 countries defied Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, voting it as “null and void”.
The move comes after the US President said he would cut financial aid to countries voting against this.
Speaking before the vote, Trump told reporters at the White House: “They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars, and then they vote against us.
“Well, we’re watching those votes. Let them vote against us. We’ll save a lot. We don’t care.”
But many countries, including the UK, refused to be bullied over an issue that has already caused division in the Middle East and threatened to spark more conflict in the embattled region.
The 193-member UN General Assembly held a rare emergency special session – at the request of Arab and Muslim countries – in which 128 countries voted in favour of a resolution rejecting US President Donald Trump’s controversial decision on December 6.
Nine countries voted against, while 35 abstained.
