The vacation rental company said around 14,000 European hosts and 4,000 US ones offered to receive Ukrainians.
“Perhaps it's not a good idea for Richard Madeley to start talking about the war going nuclear to that poor woman hiding in her basement with her three children in Kiev?," one Twitter user said.
"For many it doesn’t mean much. But this photograph says something entirely different," the district mayor said.
Poland has taken in the highest number of people, fast approaching two million, whilst Romania has received almost half a million.
She said Ukrainians cannot “get onto Instagram and advertise themselves in the hope that a British family might notice them”.
"Mothers have the biggest empathy towards everything happening in Ukraine," one Romanian woman noted.

"We hope to host them for as long as it's needed," the Romanian host said.
"Beautiful music, which only serves as a counterpoint to the harsh, ugly circumstances forced on these peaceful, freedom-loving people. They don't deserve what's happening to them; it's just tragic."
