An American reporter put the new foreign secretary Boris Johnson on the spot during a press conference with John Kerry, the US Secretary of State.
The journalist said Boris has been guilty of telling “outright lies” as he and Kerry both squirmed in front of the cameras.
Kerry said Boris was of “considerable intellect” and “a very smart and capable man”.
But the American news outlets who have travelled across the pond with Kerry didn’t seem as friendly.
They grilled Johnson on previous comments including branding Hillary Clinton a “sadistic nurse” and President Obama “part-Kenyan”.
One hack said: “I understand you don’t want to revisit the past, but you have an unusually long history of wild exaggerations and frankly outright lies, which I think few foreign secretaries have prior to this job.”
Johnson, said: “people are more than welcome to rake over stuff I have written over many, many years.
“I’m afraid there is such a rich thesaurus of things I’ve said that have been, one way or another, through what alchemy I do not know, somehow misconstrued, that it would really take me too long to enface in a full global itinerary of apology.
“People who read the things in their proper context can understand what was intended.”
So I guess that’s a no on the apology front then. Let’s hope future meetings with world leaders go smoother than this, I won’t hold my breath.
