The Daily Mail has taken an ungracious swipe at ex-prisoners who take up jobs when they are released from jail.
A prominent story in today’s newspaper features an ex-convict who is working in a McDonald’s in Yorkshire while on day release from Askham Grange, a women’s open-category prison.
The right-wing publication hit out at the prisoner and splashed pictures of her working before asking why she was allowed to walk back to the prison without an escort.
She even bought an ice cream for the two-mile journey, which she undertook while wearing an orange high-visibility jacket over her McDonald’s uniform.
Despite dubbing her a “notorious inmate”, the Mail admits that the identity of the female inmate is unknown – as are the nature of her offences!
People have been quick to react on social media, with the majority taking the time to explain what the nature of rehabilitation is.
Timpson was also trending due to the stellar work it does with offenders.
The high street chain has continued to help ex-convicts by giving them a second chance.
A tenth of employees are ex-offenders and it runs training schemes in prisons to help people when they get out.
This comment sums up neatly the general consensus towards the family-run firm:
