Labour is on course to sweep London in local elections with the best result for any party since 1968, a new poll has found.
Jeremy Corbyn’s party will seize several Tory strongholds and win a greater share of the vote than any party for 50 years, the poll shows.
The Queen Mary University of London survey recorded 54 per cent of voters in the capital saying they would vote for the party in May’s poll, compared to just 28 per cent for the Conservatives.
As a result, its forecast shows Labour is set to seize several Tory-held councils, including the flagship boroughs of Barnet, Wandsworth and Westminster.
The results come despite recent allegations that Jeremy Corbyn collaborated with a Czech spy in the 1980s, which have been described as “smear” by the Labour leader who says the press is worried by the increasing likelihood of a Labour government.
Theresa May mocked Corbyn in parliament today over the story, even though it has more holes in it than Swiss cheese.
The Labour leader said: “Publishing these ridiculous smears that have been refuted by Czech officials shows just how worried the media bosses are by the prospect of a Labour government.
“They’re right to be. Labour will stand up to the powerful and corrupt – and take the side of the many, not the few.”
