Arch Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg has seemed to indicate he might back the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal, to avoid Brexit being abandoned all together.
Rees-Mogg admitted: “The choice seems to be Mrs May’s deal or no Brexit .” via a ConservativeHome podcast
Mogg said: “The Prime Minister will not deliver a no-deal Brexit.”
Asked if that meant the options on the table were now “deal or potentially no Brexit”, Mogg added: “That, I think, becomes the choice eventually.
“Whether we are there yet is another matter, but I have always thought that no-deal is better than Mrs May’s deal, but Mrs May’s deal is better than not leaving at all.”
He admitted he doesn’t have the backing for the Brexit he wants, he said “we have to recognise that what we want and what we can deliver is not necessarily the same because of our lack of numbers.
“The ERG and other Eurosceptics in parliament cannot win any vote on our own.”
This move could help push other hard-Brexiteers from the ERG (European Research Group) over to May’s deal.
Rees-Mogg chairs the ERG but they could hold their ground despite his potential u-turn.
