Florida voted to arm teachers

Florida’s House of Representatives voted to pass a bill allowing teachers to carry guns in the classroom, reports Huffington Post.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to sign into law a bill that would allow classroom teachers to be armed, after the state’s House voted 65 to 47 for the measure on Wednesday.

The bill states that teachers who volunteer to carry a gun on campus will first need to undergo screening and a 144-hour training course.

A state commission investigating last February’s deadly high school shooting in Parkland, Florida, unanimously approved recommendations that include a controversial proposal for some teachers to be trained and allowed to carry guns in school.

Fred Guttenberg, the father of 14-year-old Jaime, who died in the Parkland shooting, questioned how legislators “plan to fix the issues that will arise from more guns in Florida schools combined with the worst mental health system in the country.”
