Firefighters battle to save Glasgow School of Art from second, fiercer blaze.

Fire fighters attended the scene of a second fire at Glasgow’s School of Art four years after part of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed building was destroyed by fire. The blaze spread to nearby buildings including the Campus nightclub and O2 ABC music venue.

There are no casualties reported from a blaze that appeared to start at Glasgow’s iconic School of Art

The heat from the fire could be felt blocks away.

Over 120 firefighters and 20 vehicles fought the fire that started at around 11.15pm last night and nearby buildings were evacuated.

Glasgow was bereft today as the city wondered what is left of the building designed by art nouveau architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Much of the intricate details of his designs had been saved and restored after a previous fire. Years of work were almost finished, but this morning the fate of the building weakened by the previous blaze remains unknown.

“It appears there are no casualties and I hope that continues to be the case,” said Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, “this is clearly an extremely complex and large-scale incident, and one that is ongoing. I would like to thank the emergency services for their continued efforts.”

The First Minister and the Secretary For Scotland, David Mundell both vowed to provide support for the Glasgow institution.
