Donald Tusk has said extending Article 50 would be a “rational solution” as Brexit D-Day draws near without an agreement in place.
The President of the European Council said “the less time there is until 29 March, the greater the likelihood of an extension, and this is an objective fact – not our intention, not our plan, but an objective fact.”
He said an extension would be a “rational solution” but that Mrs May told him “she still believes she is able to avoid this scenario.”
The Prime Minister told German Chancellor Angela Merkel during a meeting in Egypt this morning that she still believed a deal could be struck in time for Brexit on March 29.
But in order to save face, she may bow to Cabinet rebels by offering the Commons a vote on a delay.
Defence minister Tobias Ellwood told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme it was possible Mrs May could shift ground in a Commons statement tomorrow.
He said: “The Prime Minister is listening and is recognising the fact that we have tried very, very hard in order to secure a deal.
“If we cannot get this deal across the line, we are facing the prospect of having to extend.”
