Cummings says it’s “perfectly reasonable” to think Remain should have won

Reactions have poured in after Dominic Cummings, the architect of the campaign to leave the European Union, appeared to support membership to the bloc.

Appearing in front of a select committee, the former aide of Boris Johnson told MPs “it’s perfectly reasonable to have the view that Remain should have won”.

He aded: “Reasonable people can agree or disagree about Brexit.”

In 2017 Cummings admitted Vote Leave won because they lied to the public.

Buried in a 19,800 word Spectator essay were confessions that the campaign group knew the NHS wouldn’t really take back our £350 million EU fee, that immigration wouldn’t really be capped and that standards of living wouldn’t really change if we left the bloc.

These were all matters the general public voted on and have all since been proven to be incorrect.

Reactions

Reacting to his latest confessions, one Twitter user said: “But I would never claim that it is perfectly reasonable to have the view that Leave should have won – because it’s not perfectly reasonable”.

Another user said: “He just admitted Remain should have won. Oh my god”.

Other claims Cummings has made

Cummings said that on the morning of 12 March, he told the prime minister that the Cabinet Office was “terrifyingly shit”. He allegedly told Johnson that day to tell people with symptoms to stay at home.

But he says the PM was then told that President Trump wanted the UK to join a bombing campaign later. So that took up a lot of attention, and the Covid Cobra meeting was delayed.

He says that day The Times ran a story about the PM, his girlfriend and his dog. The PM’s girlfriend wanted the press office to focus on that. She was “going crackers about something completely trivial”.

Dominic Cummings has also slammed allegations that there was a “protective shield” around care homes during the pandemic, saying it is “complete nonsense”.

He said: “The government rhetoric was we put a shield around people in career homes – that was complete nonsense.

“Quite the opposite of putting a shield around them, we sent people with Covid back to care homes with Covid.”

Cummings has also claimed Johnson never wanted tough border controls to prevent coronavirus cases brought from overseas.
