The deaths of two people who were electrocuted on trains tracks are being treated as linked by police.
Their bodies, which have yet to be identified, were found on the tracks suffering “injuries consistent with electrocution” between Hackney Wick and Stratford – one was found at 1am this morning (thurs) and the other at 2.31am.
London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called to a fire on the tracks at 1am, where they found a body and immediately alerted the British Transport Police (BTP).
BTP then found another body at 2.31am, which was closer to Stratford Station – it has confirmed it is “treating the deaths as linked at this point”.
Officers remain at the scene and are working to identify the victims so next of kin can be informed – it is unclear what gender they were.
A spokeswoman from LFB said: “We were called to reports of a fire on the railway tracks at Wallis Road.
“Crews extinguished a fire but sadly one person was found dead at the scene.
“The Brigade was called at 12.58am and the incident was over for firefighters by 2.02am.
“In relation to the second body she said: “We were called to assist BTP in Carpenters Road at 3.02am.
“Crews retrieved a casualty but sadly they were confirmed dead at the scene – the incident was over for the Brigade by 5.56am.”
A BTP spokeswoman said: “At approximately 1am in the morning on March 21, BTP were called to the line between Hackney Wick and Stratford.
“Officers attended the scene, alongside other colleagues from the London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service.
“However a person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining serious injuries consistent with electrocution.
“At 2.31am this morning, BTP officers were called to reports of a second person on the tracks close to Stratford.
“Sadly the person was also pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining serious injuries consistent with electrocution.
“Officers remain at the scene and are working to identify the diseased and inform their next of kin.”
DCI Tim Tubbs from the BTP said: “An investigation is now underway to discover what happened and how these two people lost their lives on the railway.
“At this time were are treating their deaths as unexplained and are making a number of urgent enquiries.
“We would urge anyone who was near Stratford or Hackney Wick and saw anything which they think might be relevant to contact us.”
