A wave of support for Boris Johnson to be the next leader of the Conservative Party has come crashing on the bookies, with odds slashed to 9/2 from 6/1 today.
Johnson is now the number one contender for Theresa May’s job, ahead of ally and current Environment Secretary Michael Gove and Home Secretary Sajid Javid, who are joint second favourites at 6/1.
Staunch Brexiteer backbencher Jacob Rees-Mogg sits further back at 13/2, having been as short as 5/1 to replace the PM last week.
Betway’s Alan Alger said: “One minute Boris Johnson is embroiled in a scandal and the next he’s the 9/2 favourite to be Tory leader. He remains a popular voice of the people and it’s just a matter of whether he gets the nod from his party to lead them.
“Boris’ former partner in crime Michael Gove can be backed at 6/1, as can Sajid Javid, the current Home Secretary, who will look to follow May’s footprints in elevating himself from Home Secretary to Party Leader. Brexit’s standard bearer, Jacob Rees-Mogg, remains in the running despite drifting out to 13/2 from 5/1.”
