Van driver avoided jail despite crashing into a cyclist and killing him

A careless driver has avoided jail after he lost control of his transit van and killed a cyclist.

William Cottrell, 48, ploughed into pensioner Frank Cubis, 75, during a “lapse in concentration” on a busy road.

The keen cyclist was rushed to hospital where he remained in a critical condition for almost two months before he died at around 10am on 25 May 2016.

Following his death on 5 July Cottrell was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and was found guilty at Isleworth Crown Court.

On Wednesday he was banned from driving for a year and handed 120 hours of unpaid work.

Outside court Detective Constable Sid Acharya, from the Met’s Road and Transport Policing Command said Cottrell will live the rest of his life knowing his actions cost a man his life.

He said: “Today’s result shows how one quick lapse of attention when you’re driving can lead to devastating, life changing results.

“Although Mr Cottrell has not received a jail sentence for his actions, he will forever have to live with knowing that his lapse in concentration has cost a man his life and a family a lot of pain.”
