Pensioner on mobility scooter given police escort after taking wrong turn and ending up on busy dual carriageway

This is the moment a pensioner was given a police escort after he took a wrong turn on his mobility scooter – and ended up on a busy dual carriageway.

Officers were called by concerned motorists who spotted the elderly man tootling alongside traffic on the A500 in Nantwich, Cheshire, at around 12pm on Monday (26/2).

A police van and squad car attended the scene and provided an escort to help bring the OAP back onto the pavement so he could safely make his way home.

Is is not known how far or for how long the man had travelled along the busy commuter route but Cheshire Police said he had simply taken a wrong turn.

A force spokesman said: “We were called by concerned motorists who had seen the man on his scooter on the A500 near Nantwich at around 12pm.

A mobility scooter user took a wrong turn – and ended up heading down a busy duel carriageway.

“Two vehicles attended the scene and helped him get off the road so he could get home safely.

“He had taken a wrong turn and ended up on the road as he was riding back to his house. Its not something we are used to dealing with but were happy to help.”

Nantwich Police posted an image on Twitter of the stricken rider wearing a wooly hat
in the middle of the road.

Tweeting from their @PoliceNantwich account they said: “It’s not often a mobility scooter gets a police escort… Fortunately when this ones rider took a wrong turn onto the A500 we were on hand to lead them to safety.”

One web user Beverley Jones replied: “Does it really need two police cars to get an old man in a mobility scooter off the road?”

Ian Lowton added: “That’s pretty dangerous, busy road that is, credit to the cops for helping an old fella in need.”
