Driver cheats death after 2.5foot metal rod pierces chest during car crash

A driver had a miraculous survival after he dozed off at the wheel and was impaled with a 2.5 foot rod which went straight through his chest.

Night shift worker Piyush Sundarva, 26, was driving home at 7.30am on the SG Highway in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, when he swerved into a metal road divider.

The bars smashed through the car window and pierced Mr Sundarva’s chest, coming out the other side beneath his armpit.

Despite his horror injuries, Mr Sundarva was able to scream for help and an ambulance was soon at the scene.

Passersby rushed to help and sliced the metal rod to separate it from the road divider.

The blood-soaked crash victim was taken to Shalby Muti Specialty Hospital in Ahmedabad where he went under the knife for 2.5 hours.

Consultant Dr. Bhavin Desai removed the rod and debris from the crash from the patient’s chest.

He also lost two fingers and suffered nine broken ribs, and his liver was damaged.

Gruseome stitches held together Mr Sundarva’s chest after the surgery and he was kept in hospital for post-op care after the devastating crash.

Deputy general manager of Shalby Hospital, Avdhut Kothari, said: “Piyush was saved only because of the people who separated the rod from the divider.

“His liver was partly damaged due to the overall shock of the accident. But he will be fine after treatment. We will allow the fractured bones to heal on their own”.
