A 16-year-old girl was today (mon) being quizzed by detectives on suspicion of attempted murder after a school welfare officer was stabbed with a kitchen knife.
Police swooped on Winterton Community Academy in Winterton, North Lincs., this morning after reports of the stabbing just as the school day was starting.
A 61-year-old woman, who works as a welfare officer at the school rated as ‘Good’ in its last Ofsted inspection, was rushed to hospital with stab wounds.
Her injuries are believed to be serious but non-life-threatening.
A police spokesman said the woman was stabbed with a small, black-handled kitchen knife with a two-and-a-half-inch blade.
The girl, who attends the mixed-sex school, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the incident and remains in police custody.
Chief Superintendent Christine Wilson said: “We attended a serious incident just before 9am this morning at Winterton Community Academy and a 61-year-old woman is being treated in hospital for serious but not life-threatening injuries.
“Staff at the school and police officers responded to this isolated incident very quickly, and one person is currently in custody as a result.
“There was no disruption to any other children, non of whom witnessed the incident. Children at the school have not been directly affected by this.
Headteacher Mr Gareth Morris said: “We are keen to reassure parents and the community that this is an isolated incident and that the school remains open.
“We will support our staff directly affected and will be keeping parents updated throughout the day.”
Winterton Community Academy is a mixed-sex school with 518 students on its rolls.
It converted to an academy from comprehensive status in 2012 and was rated as Good during its last Ofsted inspection in 2016.
The school is based in Winterton – a small town in north Lincolnshire about five miles away from Scunthorpe, Lincs.
