New data released by online clothing retailer Clothes2Order has revealed that 74.8% of people in London are more likely to buy products from eco-friendly brands, more than any other region in the UK.
The data, from a survey commissioned to find out people’s opinions on eco-friendly brands and ethical practises, and found that over half (61.6%) of people in London that took the survey said they have researched a brand’s policies before making a purchase, and 65.4% saying they would consider themselves ‘ethical shoppers’.
With plastic pollution dominating headlines, and the public becoming increasingly aware of the impact their daily lives have on the environment, it appears consumers in London are taking note and critiquing not only the products they’re buying, but the businesses they’re buying from.
But, what are the top reasons for consumers’ more ethical shopping habits?
- I care about the environment – 44.30%
- It’s the right thing to do – 50%
- It helps people in poorer countries – 25.70%
- It makes me feel good – 25.70%
- I feel obliged to do my bit – 18.60%
- My friends and family do it – 15.70%
- It’ the ‘in’ thing to do – 15.70%
Interestingly, over half of the people surveyed from London (59%) admitted to having previously boycotted a brand based on it ethics or the way their products are produced, and 56.10% said they would happily splash a bit more cash on a product that has been produced using more eco-friendly methods and materials.
Simon Turner, marketing director of Clothes2Order commented on the statistics…
“The results from our survey have categorically shown consumer attitudes are changing, and business owners are going to have to adapt to greener methods of working or face the consequences.
“Practises such as water saving technologies, which we have implemented within our production, plastic minimisation and carbon footprint reductive techniques are not only good for the environment, but now appear to be a savvy business move for those looking to keep in touch with their customer’s attitudes.”
