This week we celebrate the pioneering spirit of the Saint-Mont winegrowers with this Rose wine that salutes the revival of several ancient grape varieties which had almost disappeared.
Hailing from the Gers region of France the first vines in this area were planted in the 11th century by Benedictine monks.
And the very same monastery still stands today, overlooking the village of Saint Mont.
The wine is also named for the pilgrims who used to pass through the village of Saint Mont on their way to Santiago Compostela – “the pilgrim’s path.”
A blend of three grape varieties native to the region are grown by dedicated farmer, taking Pinenc and Tannat grape varieties along with the better-known Cabernet Sauvignon.
The resultant wine is an explosion of berries on the palate. Red currants and cherries leave a fresh and fruity feel perfect for the summer months. A little like eton mess in a bottle.
Try it with bruschetta, watermelon, feta and mint salad or with a pudding of strawberries macerated with black pepper.
