Watercress sales soaring as Britain’s heatwave kills off competition – lettuce, cauliflower & broccoli

Watercress sales are soaring as Britain’s heatwave kills off its competition – lettuce, cauliflower and broccoli.

The strong-tasting leaf is not affected by the hot dry weather as it is watered with underground aquifers.

Lettuce plants struggle to grow in these conditions as they rely on rainfall instead.

Tom Amery, of Hampshire-based The Watercress Company, says sales of the aquatic vegetable rich in vitamin K have soared as a result.

He said: “I appreciate this is a difficult time for UK lettuce growers and we empathise as we are suffering too with our baby salad leaf, spinach and lettuce crops.”
