Beer of the Week: UnBarred Brewery 3B’s

Established in a small kitchen during 2014 – UnBarred Brewery began life from a flat in Hove, having since become a full-time operation striving to craft “delicious new beers that won’t be found in the rule-book.”

Paying due respect and attention to all stages of the craft; from the creation and ingredient sourcing, to relationships with suppliers and consumers, the nature of the brewery’s brewing process – using only the freshest ingredients – means UnBarred doesn’t have a ‘core’ range of beers, per se. Instead, each of the brewery’s beers are intentionally innovative, inspired by some of the best brews in the world. The natural brewing process relies on avoiding filterings and finings, using natural carbonation for a soft and distinctive body.

A collaboration with Soundwaves Brewing Ltd, UnBarred’s ‘3B’s’is a Belgian style India Pale Ale originally brewed on Brighton beach. Brewed with fresh Ardennes Belgian yeast, Belgian malts and a melange of new world hops, 3B’s has a golden-straw complexion, crowned with a foaming white head. On the nose, sweet malt notes of biscuit and light caramel are joined by aromas of apricot, lemon sherbet, freshly baked bread and some feint floral hints. On the palate, the beer has modest sweetness from the malt profile, balanced with some dry bitterness and some further yeast notes. Elsewhere, a medicinal trace eventually prevails, welcoming the smooth, lightly bitter finish with its foamy mouth feel. A quaffable, well-rounded IPA.
