England’s curry hot-spots were crying into their kormas yesterday – after Glasgow was named Britain’s spice capital.
According to a study Indian food fans in Scotland’s second city like their dishes hotter than anyone south of the border, including those in Bradford, Leicester and Birmingham.
Curry-lovers in Southampton finished just behind Glasgow in the poll, followed by Cambridge, Cardiff and Liverpool.
To celebrate Glaswegian’s penchant for spice, UberEATS partnered with Indian restaurant Tuk Tuk to create the ‘Hellfire Phaal’.
The ‘Hellfire Phaal’ is twice as spicy as a Vindaloo and includes chillies not found in mainstream supermarkets.
UberEATS are inviting locals to try the super hot curry throughout National Curry Week, which runs from the 9th to 15th of October.
The dish contains a hell-like hot mixture of spices, including a dozen chillies.
Chefs at Tuk Tuk donned protective gloves and eyewear in order to protect themselves during the making of the dish.
Chef Deepak Sapkota, 31, said: “This curry isn’t your madras or vindaloo, this is much hotter.
”In fact, we have never served a curry this hot before here at Tuk Tuk.
”We know our guests love spice as they’re always asking for an extra chilli here and there so we’re thrilled to be able to create this never before seen curry with UberEATS.
“The chillies in this dish can’t be found in mainstream shops, you’ll have to hunt them down in specialist ones or just order my creation using the app.
”My secret weapon is always lemon juice, it sounds simple, but it’s a chef’s best friend when creating curry.
“I’ve been cooking traditional curries for over 12 years. I first learnt how from my family in Nepal. I love Nepalese cooking and use a lot of those tricks in my methods today.”
The spice poll, which was commissioned by UberEATS, also discovered that as a nation, six out of ten of us have a favourite curry house which we loyally buy from on a weekly basis.
And four out of ten usually opt for the same meal completely.
Tikka masala is the most popular curry dish.
Chicken remains our favourite meat choice with pilau rice on the side. The research, carried out via OnePoll.com also found the classic onion bhaji is our best-loved starter followed by samosas and sag aloo.
It also emerged around 17 per cent of the population order a hotter curry than usual when they are out with friends in a bid to outdo their pals.
Brummies are ordering more curries in an average month than any other city and Liverpool is the garlic naan hotspot of the UK.
Meanwhile locals in Norwich have the mildest palette.
Six in ten Londoners prefer the taste of their local curry house and half of Londoners would eat more curry if it was conveniently available.
Our love of Indian fare means curry has now beaten pizza as the most popular choice for a takeaway and six in ten agree that their local curry house makes a much better curry than they do.
