Beer of the Week: Porterhouse Brewing Co. Plain Porter

In celebration of their 21st anniversary, The Porterhouse Brewing Company have recently begun to supply their range of craft beers throughout the United Kingdom. Initially opening Ireland’s first brewpub, The Porterhouse Brewing Company was launched by cousins Liam LeHart and Oliver Hughes, spotting an opportunity to compete against the bland beers being produced by mass-producing breweries, at the time. Since then, the brewery has developed a four-strong core range, while The Porterhouse in Temple Bar still serves just the brewery’s draft, craft beer brewed on site.

Awarded a gold medal at the world’s most prestigious international brewing industry award in 1998/1999 and 2011/2012, Porterhouse’s Plain Porter is far from plain. Brewed in Dublin with Galena, Nugget and East Kent Golding Hops, when poured Plain Porter is black with hues of ruby, topped with a foamy tan head. On the nose, milk chocolate, fresh ground coffee beans and dark berries are present, plus a complex, sweet malt profile from the beer’s use of pale malt, flaked barley, roast barley, black malt and crystal malt.

Pronounced notes of coffee and chocolate continue onto the palate, joined by some biscuit and a light bitterness that balances the malt profile’s light sweetness. Distinctively bold on flavour, Plain Porter also has a light dryness that continues on the finish with a smooth, velvety mouth feel and light bitterness complete with even further sweet chocolate notes. An outstanding porter from one of Ireland’s best loved craft breweries.
