Founded on the back of a hobby that turned into an obsession, Wild Card Brewery functions from its own site in Walthamstow, having opened at the beginning of last year. And featuring four core beers inspired by picture cards (Jack, Queen, King, Ace), this week’s pick is a blonde beer – the brewery’s King of Hearts. Upon pouring from the bottle with its notable artwork, an opaque golden-butterscotch liquid is topped with a creamy beige head that soon disappears. On the nose, potent aromas of tropical fruit are delivered, although the taste is – in contrast – made up of mainly citrus notes, followed by a very light touch of biscuit flavour that works into a clean albeit bitter finish. It’s not the most exciting blonde beer on the market, but it’s the beers power of refreshment that’s most promising.
