Beer of the Week: Hop Stuff DDH IPA

Born in a unit at Woolwich’s Royal Arsenal, Hop Stuff Brewery has since become one of the fastest growing craft breweries in London. ‘Funding III’ – a crowdfunding initiative – drew to a close earlier this year after just two days; receiving over 190 per cent of the original target, with more than 1,000 investors having participated. Founded by James Yeomans in 2013, Hop Stuff is the only brewer in the world to successfully complete three rounds of funding via Crowdcude, raising over £1.5m in the process. The brewery plans to grow its Taproom business from three to eight sites by the end of 2019, recruit more team members and export their beers overseas.

Speaking on the success of ‘Funding III’, founder James Yeomans said: “The reception to Funding III has been incredible. We had of course hoped it would be successful, but never imagined funding in just two days. It goes to show how much our message resonates with people, offering uncomplicated and approachable craft beer to more and more people. The funds will be pumped directly into our Taproom business, helping us open five more in the next two years. This platform of investors and funds position us perfectly for rapid growth and we’re incredibly excited to see what we can do in 2018”.

Coinciding with ‘Funding III’, Hop Stuff has launched two new beers in 440ml can format: Freudian Strip Vienna Lager and Double Dry Hopped IPA (DDH IPA). An almighty ode to the brewery’s namesake – at seven per cent ABV – DDH IPA is loaded with American Mosaic and Simcoe hops. As expected from the profound hop character, the opaque copper liquid vaunts prominent fruity aromas. Notes of apricot, lychee and passion fruit are joined by citrus notes of orange juice and grapefruit rind, plus some resinous pine. On the tongue, DDH IPA is juicy, with continuing tropical savours, rife with apricot and succinct bitterness typical of IPA. Citrus notes eventually prevail, lingering on the beer’s long, bitter finish.
