The historic heart of Glasgow’s only Microbrewery, Drygate Brewing Co. has been operating since 2014. With a state of the art bespoke 24 Hectolitre Brewhouse and a 250 litre Studio Brewery, Drygate was set up by a team with shared passion for great beer. On site, the brewery also has a Brewhouse Bar and Kitchen, with 26 rotating beers on tap, a specially curated bottle selection and a food menu with prominent focus on fresh, local ingredients.
Following the success of the brewery’s four-strong core range, Drygate also offer a ‘Studio Range’ of four beers. From the latter, Orinoco Mocha Milk Stout is a breakfast stout style beer, brewed with German Herkules hops, predominantly used for bittering. The brewing process also uses five malt varieties (Pale, Chocolate, Flaked Oats, Crystal 150, Torrified Wheat) and additional adjuncts: Colombian coffee, vanilla, cacao nibs and lactose sugar.
When poured from its eye-catching can, Orinoco is black-brown, opaque with a small tan head. On the nose, typical breakfast stout notes of coffee, chocolate and vanilla are joined by a profound whiff of peanut butter, joined by some soft caramel, fruitcake and slight herbal notes. Unsurprisingly, those chocolate and coffee notes continue on the palate, balanced with an intense malt profile, which works well with creamy lactic notes and the light, prickly carbonation. Elsewhere, some nominal mineral flavours prevail, followed by further savours of milky coffee, continuing with a sweet, lasting finish harbouring weighty tastes of chocolate and vanilla.
