Beer of the Week – BrewDog #MashTag ‘15

By Jonathan Hatchman, Food Editor, @TLE_Food

Strength: 10%

Brewed: Ellon, Scotland

Tired of a market dominated by industrially brewed Lagers and Ales, the team behind BrewDog set up the world’s first crowd-funded brewery in 2007. Now operating from a site in Ellon, just north of Aberdeen, a community of over 14,500 investors owns the business, with shares in the brewery still available. And what’s more, the brewery that’s made for the people, by the people is still constantly striving to encourage passion for Craft Beer.

Following the success of their 2013 #MashTag, with ingredients, brewing process, label, etc. voted for using the Internet, BrewDog have recently unveiled this year’s version. Branded as a U.S. hopped Black Barley Wine with a staggering 10% volume, the result is a very acquired taste. When poured there’s a dark appearance that’s topped with a small head, while the aroma delivers hints of Molasses and Vanilla which features heavily in the brewing process, as do Oak chips. On top of that, the taste contains a bitter Chocolate base with notes of Biscuit and roasted Coffee, completed by a long finish.

Head to BrewDog.com for more information on this year’s #MashTag and how to become an investor.
