Chloe Zhao has become the first woman of colour to win the Best Director statuette, and only the second woman overall to do so, with drama Nomadland, which also won Best Picture and Best Actress for lead Frances McDormand at last night’s Academy Awards ceremony.
This is McDormand’s third best actress win, following Fargo (1996) and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017). The record for any performer is Kathryn Hepburn, with four.
Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor for The Father, about an elderly man struggling with dementia and co-starring Olivia Colman. This is Hopkins’ first Oscars win since his legendary performance as Hannibal Lecter in 1991’s The Silence of the Lambs, and one that makes him the oldest Best Actor winner at the age of 83. In a delayed acceptance speech, Hopkins paid tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman, who was nominated posthumously for Best Actor for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
Daniel Kaluuya was the other British actor to take home a statuette, winning Best Supporting Actor for Judas and the Black Messiah, which focused around the Black Panther movement in the US. He had previously been nominated for Best Actor for the 2017 film Get Out.
Other winners included Sound of Metal, which won for Best Sound and Best Editing. British actor Riz Ahmed became the first Muslim nominated for Best Actor for his role as a heavy metal drummer who discovers he is losing his hearing.
