New releases are starting to come thick and fast, including some very interesting re-releases. I’ve included a track from the Bread Woman project from Anna Holmer and Steve Moshier, a definite contender for re-release of the year. Also an unbelievable Moroccan funk cover of James Brown’s ‘Papa’s Got A Brand New...
By Declan Roberts (@DeclanMR) 28.1.16, Engine Rooms, Southampton SXSW has finally found its way to the south coast of England. Radio 6’s Steve Lamacq has brought new bands to Southampton’s Engine Rooms for Independent Venue Week, flaunting some of 2016’s most promising acts. Avec Sans - a duo from London who make dance/electronic music – open the night with a speaker-busting bass blast. The short sharp shock of distortion is attention-grabbing; Jack St. James’ drum machine is an added bonus,...
By Declan Roberts (@DeclanMR) It’s late November 2015 and it is not the most glamorous of settings for Lyke Byson’s first band interview but Winchester’s cold exterior offers a Christmas vibe like no other. Still, a few drinks should help the band warm up, with Joe Brownen (lead singer), John Hutson (guitarist), Will Coles (guitarist), Ben Brownen (bass) and Jack Hayward (drums) working on their beer jackets before we get started. We start with influences. “I like to think that...

Some more familiar names on the list this week (an awesome version of Crazy In Love and a Katy B track with FourTet and Floating Points), along with Gil Scott-Heron, a great Yusef Lateef track, more Nicolas Jaar and lots of others. As always, visit my blog to listen back to the previous 32 weeks. Happy listening… https://open.spotify.com/user/11123730619/playlist/3DvamLiez3h5YRQS1ViKNY
Newcastle based alt-pop quintet Shields have filmed a series of live sessions in anticipation of their debut album, 'How Can We Fix This?' out via Kaleidoscope on Feb 26th. The band, who've recently secured a New Band of the Week feature with the Guardian and a BBC 6 Music session with Tom Robinson, are displaying their equally polished live sound in these videos, and giving people a flavour for the upcoming record. The first video for 'Alive' is also filmed...

A bit more of a positive mood this week kicking off with Darondo ‘ Didn't I Treat You Right?' and straight into the Pink Martini version of Mas Que Nada. I love this song, my all time favourite version is on the Madlib Medicine Show Flight To Brazil album, but sadly that’s not on Spotify so you’ll have to make...
Following on from the release of the bands latest single 'Play Fire' in 2015 (their first single in close to two years), Enemies have now announced that they will be playing a short run of dates across the U.K in March 2016. The dates precede a US tour with Topshelf Records labelmates Weatherbox and Prawn. The dates (two of which will feature support from Delta Sleep) are as follows: 09.03.16 - Leeds, UK @ Nation Of Shopkeepers (Tickets) 10.03.16...
By Callum Towler (@CallumTowler) Always ahead of the curve, wasn't he? Almost annoying so. David Bowie’s interviews - to which I’ve dedicated a lot of time recently - reveal just how fiercely intelligent he was; always with one of those mysterious eyes fixed on the future. I wouldn’t say I’m a die-hard acolyte. Sadly, I wasn’t there in the 70′s to experience the fervent anticipation that was a new Bowie album. That “what on earth is he going to do...
By Alex Lodge (@alexlodgemusic | Insta @alexlodgemusic7) Alex Lodge is a music supervisor for film, TV and advertising at Studio 32 Music. According to the Internet, today is ‘Blue Monday’, which if you believe the tsunami of lifestyle articles flooding your timeline means that we all feel more miserable today than on any other day of the year. Admittedly, I finished this playlist before finding out about this so haven’t made any effort to counteract your inevitable feelings of emptiness with any significantly...
