Imagine there was no… John Lennon. Actually, it’s not so easy if you try. The former Beatle left an indelible mark on the world before he was assassinated in 1980, having written and performed some of the world’s best loved songs, both with The Beatles and after in his later solo career. But, as we all know, John Lennon wasn’t just a pop star or another musician who faded into obscurity after initial success, he was a prolific campaigner for peace. Just over a year ago, Lennon’s wife, Yoko Ono, used perhaps one of the most famous symbols of the man–his round “teashade” glasses–as an emblem for all that he stood for, a message of peace, a cry out against gun violence.
John Lennon’s glasses have become more than just an accessory, they are a defining feature of the man, and an enduring symbol of his beliefs and legacy. As this week sees the anniversary of not only his birth–on 9th October–but also the release of his seminal track ‘Imagine’–on 11th October–we’ve taken a closer look into those iconic frames and seen why they are so much more than just another pair of specs.
