This is a full list of MPs who voted to remove the guarantee of a hot meal from the bellies of a million children from lower income families in England.
Theresa May is ploughing ahead with changes to free school meals, childcare vouchers and free childcare as part of the flagship Conservative Universal Credit welfare policy.
Shadow education secretary Angela Rayner had to fight to be granted a vote on the changes after chancellor Philip Hammond’s spring statement last night.
Sadly every single Conservative MP and all nine DUP MPs – see full list below voted against her amendment that Labour said would protect one million children from working poor families lose their free school meals.
The new household earnings threshold for free school meals for children – apart from reception, Years 1 and 2, will be £7,400 (£18,000 to £24,000 a year including benefits). Any families earning above that will no longer qualify.
The number of children living in poverty in Britain is set to soar to 5.2 million in the next five years.
By 2021-22, the Institute for Fiscal Studies expects 37 per cent of British children to be living in relative poverty – the highest percentage since modern records began in 1961.
The Labour Party was hoping for a few Tory or DUP rebels to help defeat the Government. But there were none.
In Northern Ireland, where the Government controls spending budgets, until the Stormont Government resumes the threshold for eligibility will be double the rate for families in England – at £14,000.
“The Tories and the DUP have just voted through cuts to free school meals in England,” tweeted Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn. “The Tories bought the DUP’s support by excluding Northern Ireland from these cuts. A disgraceful tactic which is playing politics with the health of our children.”
Theresa May has in the past been accused of buying DUP support with £1Billion in extra spending since needing them for a majority after the election she called.
Northern Ireland Secretary Karen Bradley has just approved £410 million in new funding for Northern Ireland, including £80m for “immediate health and education pressures”.
– Stark contrast to austerity suffered in the rest of the UK, which was not alleviated in the Chancellor Philip Hammond’s Spring Statement.
And it recently emerged that Michael Gove and ex-minister Priti Patel have recently been present at £1,500-a-table fundraisers for the DUP.
