Steve Bannon appeared to give a Nazi salute as he was speaking at a conservative conference in the US.
The former adviser to Donald Trump was speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington on Thursday when he performed the gesture.
This comes just weeks after Elon Musk performed a similarly disturbing gesture on the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration last month.
As Bannon came to the end of his speech, he told those in attendance: “The only way that they win is if we retreat, adn we’re not going to retreat, we’re not going to surrender, we’re not going to quit. Fight, fight, fight!”
As the crowd applauded him, he then lifted his straight right arm up and out to the side, with a flat palm.
On X, several people said the gesture was a “Sieg Heil,” a “Nazi salute” and a “Roman salute.”
Journalist Aaron Rupar said the salute “is what it is and it’s what Bannon intended.”
“Don’t let yourself be gaslit,” he added.
Grassroots political organisation Really American said the salute was another example of “Trump’s America,” whilst Joshua Reed Eakle, president of the Project Liberal organization, declared in a response to the clip on X: “Nazism has officially taken over the GOP.”
