The Sun has called on Rishi Sunak to bite the bullet and “derail woke HS2” in a stinging critique of the infrastructure project.
The prime minister indicated that he could be set to axe the rail line from Birmingham to Manchester, despite opposition from Tory predecessors, business chiefs and major donors.
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has said costs are “out of control” and had increased by £8 billion, which mainly relates to the added cost of tunnelling through the Chilterns.
It has also been suggested that trains may terminate in a West London suburb rather than continuing through to London Euston to save on costs.
Hitting out at the project, The Sun dubbed it “a global embarrassment” and “almost entirely pointless”, as well as suggesting the rail line might even have political leanings.
It’s not the first time a railway has attracted such attention.
GB News featured a steam-powered locomotive on ‘woke watch’ last year after the technology was linked to the slave trade.
It led to suggestions that steam trains were being “cancelled” from the news channel.
