Nigel Farage and his Brexit Party are well-fancied by bookmakers to secure their first seat in the House of Commons by winning the Peterborough by-election.
Set to take place in the coming weeks after support for a petition ousted sitting MP Fiona Onasanya, Betway rates the Brexit Party as 13/8 second-favourites to triumph in the Leave-voting city.
Peterborough voted overwhelmingly to leave in the EU referendum, returning 60.9 per cent in favour of exiting the European Union against 39.1 per cent in favour of remaining.
Farage could put himself up as the Brexit Party’s candidate and is 2/1 to win a place in Parliament at his eighth attempt.
Labour will be looking to repair their reputation in the constituency and are the 4/5 favourites to retain the seat, while the Conservatives are 8/1.
Betway’s Alan Alger said: “With Fiona Onasanya ousted as MP in Peterborough, the door to Westminster appears to have creaked open for Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party.
“Peterborough was a Leave-voting city in the EU Referendum and, under a fresh drive from Farage, we think they’ll put up a good fight against Labour.
“It looks very much like a two-horse race between the Brexit Party, who are 13/8 to win their first seat in Parliament, and a battling Labour who are 4/5 to keep the constituency red.
“There’s a few people that fancy Farage to put himself up for the seat and he’s 2/1 to finally win a place in the Commons after seven previous attempts.”
